What does Purple Urchin create?

Well I have a few different ranges including; sculptures mounted on driftwood, garden decor, jewellery, seasonal decorations for the whole year, and gifts to suit all occasions. Bespoke work is always welcomed as I love the challenge of crafting something new.

...and how?

I specialise in using copper foil to join the glass, it allows greater freedom to design more intricate pieces which can’t be achieved using traditional leadwork. Each piece of glass is cut by hand, surrounded in copper foil, then soldered together. I use coloured sheet, mirror, and recycled glass,  also sea glass, marbles, and nuggets. I sometimes incorporate engraving and etching, and tumble glass to alter the surface appearance.  I add finer detailing and dimension to my designs using different gauges of wire and glass beads.

Back story and why Purple Urchin?

Starting with evening classes 30 years ago I learnt traditional stained glass work, I studied both leadwork and copper foil (Tiffany) methods and after a couple of years tuition I went off to design and create my own ideas as a hobbyist. I turned professional in 2016 and moved into my first studio space the year after. I started teaching on a one to one basis in 2022 and in early 2023 after a close family member was diagnosed with cancer I decided to  pause Purple Urchin and move to support them....

....Now I'm settled on the Beara Peninsula in South West County Cork, Ireland, it's January 2024 and Purple Urchin is up and running again. I've moved into a purpose built studio and I'm moving forward in new surroundings. I'll be attending local art and craft events, the Etsy shop has re-opened and the Studio will be open to visitors from the beginning of May.

I found the name Purple Urchin on a local beach, a perfectly intact sea urchin shell is a real rarity, and even more so if it’s purple - so that was me. It's this kind of natural art that helps feed my inspiration, I also rely on the quirky bits of life that I think will make you smile.
